Research

Fibromyalgia scientific research has increased greatly in the past 10 years and has shifted our perspective on fibromyalgia from it being considered a rheumatologic or autoimmune disorder to what is now appreciated as a disorder primarily involving the central nervous system. Advances in neuro-imaging technology, including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) have allowed researchers to evaluate changes in the brains of FM patients, which has led to an increased understanding of alterations that occur in regions of the brain involved in pain perception that include changes in the levels of pain related neurotransmitters including dopamine, serotonin, and substance P.  As a result of these efforts thousands of peer-reviewed scientific papers on the subject of fibromyalgia are available for evaluation by the healthcare professional community. We encourage you to visit this page frequently to learn more about new pharmacological therapies, as well as scientifically-proven complementary management approaches to FM treatment.
