Local Fibromyalgia Support Group Participates in National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day
BROOKLYN, N.Y.—(15 April 2010)—After being diagnosed with
fibromyalgia in 2003, Kris Corleone from Brooklyn looked for a local support
group as a way to meet others with fibromyalgia. When she couldn’t find anything in the New York City area
she started her own group, and this year plans to “Make Fibromyalgia Visible”
as part of National Fibromyalgia Awareness
Day.
Corleone understands the limitations that come with having
fibromyalgia, which can include chronic pain, fatigue, and even cognitive
difficulties. That’s why with the
help of two of her friends she has reached out to other people in her borough
to form a support group called New York Fibromyalgia Support Group. The group plans to spread the word
about fibromyalgia and reach out to others living with it in New York. She has created a Blog (http://fibrobites.blogspot.com/),
Facebook group, and is working on a Web site.
“People come to me asking about fibromyalgia,” said
Corleone. “So there is definitely
a need to build awareness.”
The National Fibromyalgia Association and the Fibromyalgia
Research and Education Center at California State University, Fullerton will
commemorate National Fibromyalgia Day with the 3rd Annual Walk of FAME
(Fibromyalgia Awareness Means Everything). Corleone plans to participate in the Walk of FAME as a
virtual walker to raise awareness and money for fibromyalgia research.
“Make Fibromyalgia Visible”
“Make Fibromyalgia Visible” is the National
Fibromyalgia Association’s theme for this year’s National Fibromyalgia
Awareness Day, officially observed on May 12. Awareness Day is designed to increase awareness and
understanding of fibromyalgia – a chronic pain disorder usually characterized by
chronic widespread pain, multiple tender points, abnormal pain processing,
sleep disturbances, fatigue and often psychological distress.
