ANAHEIM, Calif.—The digital and print edition of the latest issue of Fibromyalgia AWARE magazine is now available from the National Fibromyalgia Association.
In this issue’s cover story, “A Farewell to Tender Points,” two top fibromyalgia experts offer two opposing viewpoints on the proposed new diagnostic criteria.
In his article, “Don’t Throw the Baby Out with the Bathwater,” Dr. Robert Bennett writes, “Omitting ‘undue sensitivity to touch’ from any diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia will, in my opinion, disparage one seminal feature that is the essence of fibromyalgia.” Bennett is one of the pioneers in fibromyalgia research, and most recently retired as Professor of Medicine and Nursing at Oregon Health and Science University.
“Time to Move Forward” by Dr. Daniel Clauw, Director of the University of Michigan Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center, responds, “I see no place for performing a tender point count in clinical practice in 2010 … Although the 1990 ACR criteria have been tremendous in achieving their intended purpose of standardizing research into fibromyalgia, in some ways these criteria have actually hurt the credibility of fibromyalgia.”
