3rd Annual Walk of FAME Comes to College Campus as part of
National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day
COLUMBUS, Ohio—(15 April 2010)—Going to college is challenging enough as it is, but imagine doing it while experiencing chronic pain, fatigue, and even cognitive difficulties. Those are just some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. As part of National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, students at Ohio Dominican University are planning a 3rd Annual Walk of FAME on Saturday, April 24.
The 3rd Annual Walk of FAME (Fibromyalgia Awareness Means Everything) is from
12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Oval on the Ohio Dominican University (ODU) campus located at 1216 Sunbury Road in Columbus. Students and the community are invited to attend the event where they can show their support and help raise awareness about fibromyalgia. The event costs $10 per participant and $5 with student identification. All proceeds will be donated to the National Fibromyalgia Association for fibromyalgia research.
The walk started two years ago when Allizon Munoz, a sophomore majoring in public relations, was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Her brother and sister organized the walk in her honor, and now Munoz carries on the tradition. With the help of her business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi, Munoz is coordinating this year’s walk that will include massages, food, games and music. There will be fibromyalgia facts posted around the Oval and butterfly pledge cards for sale to support those with fibromyalgia.
“Since there are other students at ODU who have fibromyalgia, we want to make fibromyalgia visible on campus and in the Columbus community especially since there is no cure,” said Munoz. “Everyone is welcome to attend.”
All around the country fibromyalgia patients, caregivers and supporters will be participating in walks, wearing t-shirts and spreading the word about National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. “Make Fibromyalgia Visible”
“Make Fibromyalgia Visible” is the National Fibromyalgia Association’s theme for this year’s National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, officially observed on May 12. Awareness Day is designed to increase awareness and understanding of fibromyalgia – a chronic pain disorder usually characterized by chronic widespread pain, multiple tender points, abnormal pain processing, sleep disturbances, fatigue and often psychological distress.
