Fibromyalgia is Becoming a Global Issue
Fibromyalgia is receiving increased attention around the world. As international organizations such as the International Myopain Society, EULAR and OMERACT continue to expand their efforts to encourage and promote the exchange of international research findings, patients around the globe will benefit as these activities improve our understanding of the underlying mechanisms and assessment of this chronic pain condition.
The National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA) hosted the first International Fibromyalgia Leaders Against Pain Workshop (August 20-21, 2007) in Washington D.C. Over 75 support group leaders from around the world received sponsorships, allowing them to participate in the four days of activities, which included the exchange of insights into patient advocacy, media relations and health care issues taking place in each of their countries. Participants also got to attend the scientific meeting sessions of the Seventh World Congress on Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Syndrome. (www.myopain.org/)
Today it is estimated that fibromyalgia affects 7% of the world’s population. Although the pain of fibromyalgia is a universal experience, the approach to treatment varies greatly from country to country. Patient and medical community international exchanges will help us to better understand how to diagnose and treat patients no matter where in the world they are seek treatment for fibromyalgia!
