An internet-based survey posted on the National Fibromyalgia Association website provided data for a study published in the August 22 issue of Women’s Health Issues. Authors include Dr. Jessie Jones and Dana Rutledge of California State University, Fullerton, Dr. Kim Jones of Oregon Health and Science University, NFA president Lynne Matallana, and Dr. Daniel Rooks of Novartis. Authors sought to determine the self-reported physical function level of women with fibromyalgia, and concluded that the average woman in the study sample reported having less functional ability related to activities of daily living than the average woman in her 80s living in a regular neighborhood. For instance, more than 25 percent of those participating in the survey reported having difficulty taking care of personal needs and bathing, and more than 60 percent reported difficulty doing light household tasks, going up or down a flight of stairs, walking a half mile, and lifting or carrying 10 pounds.
