International Leaders Met in DC

FMOnline, vol. 7, no. 8
The National Fibromyalgia Association hosted the Third Annual International Leaders Against Pain Seminar in Washington DC August 22-23. The NFA invited 60 support group leaders and patient advocates from around the world to attend this one-of-a-kind media, leadership, and advocacy training program. This year’s scholarship winners included 25 international fibromyalgia patients and advocates from 14 different countries, as well as 40 representing 16 US states. Two days prior to the ILAP Seminar, participants attended the MYOPAIN Seventh World Congress as guests of the NFA to learn about the latest advancements in FM research and treatment options.
It truly was a magical week of learning, networking, laughing, crying, and sharing among the 60 leaders and NFA staff and board members present. Although we invited everyone to DC to sharpen their skills as facilitators, interviewees, and patient advocates, what transpired is better described as the experience of a lifetime for each and every participant involved. Many left saying that they now feel renewed, energized, encouraged, inspired, and equipped to use their new skills to keep on fighting for themselves and the FM community.
