Walk of FAME Comes to Statesboro as part of National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day
STATESBORO, Ga.—(15 April 2010)—Going to college is
challenging enough as it is, but imagine doing it while experiencing chronic
pain, fatigue, and even cognitive difficulties. Those are just some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. As part of National
Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, students at Georgia Southern University in collaboration
with the organization My Sister’s Keeper are planning a Walk of FAME on
Saturday, May 1.
The Walk of FAME (Fibromyalgia Awareness Means Everything) is
from
10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mill Creek Regional Park located at 24 Georgia Ave. in Statesboro. Students and the community are invited
to attend the event where they can show their support and help raise awareness
about fibromyalgia.
The walk was an idea by Destiny Thomas, a senior majoring in
psychology at Georgia Southern University, who was diagnosed with fibromyalgia
in 2008. With the help of the
campus chapter of My Sister’s Keeper, Thomas is coordinating this year’s walk
that will include food and music. Participants
can donate money towards fibromyalgia research when they register for the walk
or by purchasing t-shirts and bracelets.
“We’re trying to raise awareness and funds for fibromyalgia
research,” said Thomas. “We would
like those who attend the walk to leave with just some basic information about
what fibromyalgia is so that they can get checked by their doctor if they have
any of the symptoms.”
All around the country fibromyalgia patients, caregivers and
supporters will be participating in walks, wearing t-shirts and spreading the
word about National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day.
“Make Fibromyalgia Visible”
“Make Fibromyalgia Visible” is the National
Fibromyalgia Association’s theme for this year’s National Fibromyalgia
Awareness Day, officially observed on May 12. Awareness Day is designed to increase awareness and
understanding of fibromyalgia – a chronic pain disorder usually characterized
by chronic widespread pain, multiple tender points, abnormal pain processing,
sleep disturbances, fatigue and often psychological distress.
